What is the ACT?
The ACT, or American College Testing, is a standardized entrance exam used across the United States for college admissions. This exam consists of 4 multiple-choice section tests, each graded from a scale of 1 to 36, and an optional essay prompt which is given as the last section.

Students who are wishing to enroll in college would greatly benefit from performing well on the ACT, as some colleges are making this specialized exam mandatory for college entrance.

This 2-hour and 55-minutes exam (without breaks) measures how well a student is prepared for college by testing students on their cumulative knowledge of subjects learned in high school, like English, Math, and Science.

Students are only allowed to use a graphing calculator on the Mathematics Test of the ACT.

The ACT Exam is divided into 5 different sections:
The English Test contains
multiple-choice questions
Students have 45 minutes to complete this section.
This section tests a student’s knowledge of sentence structure, rhetoric, and English language mechanics.
No partial credit will be given for incorrect answers.
The Mathematics Test contains
multiple-choice questions
Students have 60 minutes to complete this section.
This section tests a student’s knowledge of Elementary Math, Algebra, Geometry, and elementary Trigonometry.
No partial credit will be given for incorrect answers.
The Reading Test contains
multiple-choice questions
Students have 35 minutes to complete this section.
This section tests a student’s reading comprehension level, by having the student interpret specific reading passages.
No partial credit will be given for incorrect answers.
The Science Test contains
multiple-choice questions
Students have 35 minutes to complete this section.
This section tests a student’s knowledge of elementary science by having the student analyze and interpret data.
No partial credit will be given for incorrect answers.
The Writing Task contains
optional essay prompt
Students have the option of writing 1 essay in 40 minutes.
An essay score can range from 1-12, which will not get counted when determining a student’s overall score.
Essay prompts will vary from exam to exam.
How is the ACT scored?
All sections, except the writing prompt, are converted from raw scores (that are the actual number of questions answered correctly) to a scaled score that ranges from 1 to 36. These include the English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science sections of the ACT. An average is then taken from the newly scaled scores, which results in a student’s overall score. The average score is around 18 out of the total 36, but this changes from year to year.

What is on the ACT?

The ACT, or American College Testing, is a standardized entrance exam used across the United States for college admissions. This exam consists of 4 multiple-choice section tests, each graded from a scale of 1 to 36, and an optional essay prompt which is given as the last section. Even though a student’s composite score does not include the writing section, many colleges require an essay score, as it is incorporated into the admission decisions.
The first section on the ACT is the English Test, in which students need to complete 75 multiple-choice questions in 45 minutes. This section consists of five passages in which some sections are underlined. Students will have to use their knowledge of sentence structure, rhetoric, and English language mechanics to either decide if the current underlined option is correct. If it is not correct, students will then need to choose the best alternative from four given options.
The second section on the ACT is the Mathematics Test, in which students need to complete 60 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes. The math topics that will be in this section come from Elementary Math, Algebra, plane and coordinate Geometry, and elementary Trigonometry. This is the only section on the exam that has both calculator usage and five question options instead of the standard four questions on the other sections.
In the third and fourth sections on the ACT, students answer 40 multiple-choice questions in Reading and Science in 35 minutes. The Reading test requires students to read and interpret passages to answer questions that are either in the material stated explicitly or deducted from a student’s reasoning skills to establish implicit meanings. The Science test contains seven total passages, which include both text and data. Students will use their critical thinking skills to analyze and answer given science questions in three formats:
- Data Representation
- Research Summary
- Conflicting Viewpoint
In 2018, only 1% of all students who participated in the ACT obtained a score of 1520 or higher.

The final section of the ACT is the optional Writing task. Students will have to write a cohesive essay pertaining to a specific writing prompt in 40 minutes. This section of the ACT is the least exact, as there is no specific, correct essay structure that will produce a perfect score. Writing scores can range from 1-12, however, this score does not get counted when determining a student’s overall score.
A student’s composite score will be the overall average of the English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science score. The average score is around 18 out of the total 36, but this changes from year to year.

Learning principles that we stand by

Each student has a unique learning style
We understand that everyone learns differently. That's why we tailor our lessons to meet the specific needs of each individual student.

Learn how to think, not what to think
During their academic career, students may fall into the habit of memorizing facts as their primary method of learning. However, this does not allow students to think for themselves. Instead, we constantly challenge our students in a way that requires them to think and formulate their own decisions, leading to intellectual growth.

Nothing great is achieved without commitment
Mastery does not happen overnight. It requires hard work, perseverance, and a commitment to lifelong learning. We help our students maintain their commitment throughout their academic journey.

Grades are the result, not the goal
We focus on something more important than just getting a certain grade on a transcript or report card. Our goal is to provide our students with an interdisciplinary understanding that will help them perform better both in and out of the classroom.
