What is the AP Biology Exam?

AP Biology is a course offered in high school that is equivalent to a two-semester Biology college course which focuses on material such as evolution and genetics.  By taking this course, students will be afforded the opportunity to receive college credit in Biology and/or the advantage of taking more advanced courses in college.

Students who are wishing to receive college credit from taking this class must score a 3 or higher on the AP Biology Exam in May.

This 3-hour exam measures how well students can correctly recall and utilize cumulative knowledge learned in their AP Biology class.  Students must apply this knowledge in order to correctly answer both multiple-choice and free-response questions.

Students are allowed to use a simple four-operations calculator for the entire exam.

The AP Biology Exam is divided into 2 different parts:

Part 1 contains

multiple-choice questions

There will be 63 multiple-choice questions, each having 4 answer choices.

There will be 6 grid-in answers.  No answer choices will be given for these questions.

This section is worth 50% of the entire exam.

Partial credit may only be given for incorrect grid-in answers.

Part 2 contains

free-response questions

There will be 2 long-answered free-response questions, containing 5 subquestions each.

There will be 6 short-answered free-response questions, containing 2-3 subquestions each.

This section is worth 50% of the entire exam.

Partial credit may be given for incorrect answers.

Topics on the AP Biology Exam include:

  • Cell Communication & Cell Cycle
  • Cell Function & Structure
  • Cellular Energetics
  • Chemistry of Life
  • Ecology

Prerequisites that students need to master for the AP Biology Exam:

How is the AP Biology Exam scored?

Both sections of the AP Biology Exam are scored together through the use of computers, specially appointed college professors, and experienced AP Biology teachers.  This encompasses a student’s composite score which then is translated to the 1-5 scoring system by statistical and mathematical processes.  Students with scores of 3 or higher will be able to submit their scores to prospective colleges to gain college credit in Biology and/or advanced placement in future college courses.

In 2018, only 7.1% of all students who participated in the AP Biology Exam obtained a perfect score of 5.

Who benefits from AP Biology tutoring?

For many students, preparing for the cumulative AP Biology Exam in May starts at the beginning of the school year.  By taking meticulous classroom notes and diligently completing homework assignments correctly, students learn early on how to effectively plan and prepare for not only classroom exams, but also the AP Biology Exam.  Some students might have trouble understanding and learning the course material for various reasons.  That is when the use of a proficient AP Biology tutor from The Glaser Tutoring Company will greatly help, as students will be able to understand the material in an interactive and engaging way, which will naturally transfer to performing well on the AP Biology Exam.

Taking accurate notes, perfecting homework assignments, and studying for upcoming quizzes, all the while preparing for the AP Biology Exam in May, can become mentally draining and phyiscally exhausting.  However, a skilled AP Biology tutor will be able to

efficiently and effectively create the best-suited learning plan for each individual student, which will break down AP Biology topics to produce maximal absorption and retention of the material.

In addition to mastering all the topics encompassed in AP Biology, students need to retain a mastery level of certain prerequisites, such as Algebra, Biology, and Chemistry.  However, it is only natural for students to overlook these important prerequisites once the course is over, which, unfortunately, leads to the loss of mastery understanding.  Instead of attempting to relearn these important prerequisites on their own, many students will seek a skilled professional AP Biology tutor who will not only be able to teach the necessary requirements of the AP Biology course, but also be able to thoroughly and comprehensibly reteach the necessary prerequisite material in order for students to excel in the AP Biology Exam.

Learning principles that we stand by

Each student has a unique learning style

We understand that everyone learns differently.  That's why we tailor our lessons to meet the specific needs of each individual student.

Learn how to think, not what to think

During their academic career, students may fall into the habit of memorizing facts as their primary method of learning.  However, this does not allow students to think for themselves.  Instead, we constantly challenge our students in a way that requires them to think and formulate their own decisions, leading to intellectual growth.

Nothing great is achieved without commitment

Mastery does not happen overnight.  It requires hard work, perseverance, and a commitment to lifelong learning.  We help our students maintain their commitment throughout their academic journey.

Grades are the result, not the goal

We focus on something more important than just getting a certain grade on a transcript or report card.  Our goal is to provide our students with an interdisciplinary understanding that will help them perform better both in and out of the classroom.
