What is the AP Calculus AB Exam?

AP Calculus AB is a course offered in high school that is the equivalent to a one-semester college Calculus course which focuses on differentiation and integration. By taking this course, students are afforded the opportunity to receive college credit in Calculus and/or the advantage of taking more advanced courses in college.

Students who are wishing to receive college credit from taking this class must score a 3 or higher on the AP Calculus AB in May.

This 3-hour and 15-minute exam measures how well students can correctly recall and utilize cumulative knowledge learned in their AP Calculus AB class.  Students must apply this knowledge in order to correctly answer both multiple-choice and free-response questions.

Students will be allowed to use a graphing calculator only on certain portions of this exam.

The AP Calculus AB Exam is divided into 2 different parts:

Part 1 contains

multiple-choice questions

Part A contains 30 multiple-choice questions to be completed without a calculator in 60 minutes.

Part B contains 15 multiple-choice questions to be completed with a calculator in 45 minutes.

All questions will contain 4 answer choices.

This section is worth 50% of the entire exam.

No partial credit will be given for incorrect answers.

Part 2 contains

free-response questions

Part B contains 4 free-response questions to be completed without a calculator in 60 minutes.

Prerequisites that students need to master for the AP Calculus AB Exam:

How is the AP Calculus AB Exam scored?

Both sections are scored together through the use of computers, specially appointed college professors, and experienced AP Calculus AB teachers.  This encompasses a student’s composite score which is then translated to the 1-5 scoring system by statistical and mathematical processes.  Students with scores of 3 or higher will be able to submit their scores to prospective colleges to gain Calculus college credit and/or advanced placement in future college courses.

In 2018, only 19.0% of all students who participated in the AP Calculus AB Exam obtained a perfect score of 5.

Who benefits from AP Calculus AB tutoring?

AP Calculus AB is the ‘younger sibling’ of AP Calculus BC, but it is a course that commands a lot of diligence and preparation from students in order to not only master interim exams during class, but also to perform well on the AP Calculus AB Exam in May.  This class demands a substantial amount of time and effort from students already juggling busy schedules, and it is sometimes difficult for them to progress with the material in the allotted amount of time.  However, when working with a skilled AP Calculus AB tutor from The Glaser Tutoring Company, students will be able to thoroughly understand the required material in order to prepare for the AP Calculus AB Exam.

By working with a private one-on-one AB Calculus AB tutor, students can learn and master the classroom lessons in the most efficient and effective way, which is

catered to their unique learning style.  Students will be more apt to absorb and retain the Calculus AB material because the tutor will present the material in the most engaging and enjoyable environment.

A proficient AP Calculus AB tutor will not only have a comprehensive knowledge of the topics presented in a Calculus class,  but will also have a mastery knowledge of all of the prerequisite classes, such as Algebra, Geometry, and Trigonometry.  In this case, students who have had previous difficulty in past math courses can be assured that they will gain the comprehensive knowledge of both prerequisite topics and current Calculus material, in order to perform well on not only classroom exams, but on the AP Calculus AB Exam given in May.

Learning principles that we stand by

Each student has a unique learning style

We understand that everyone learns differently.  That's why we tailor our lessons to meet the specific needs of each individual student.

Learn how to think, not what to think

During their academic career, students may fall into the habit of memorizing facts as their primary method of learning.  However, this does not allow students to think for themselves.  Instead, we constantly challenge our students in a way that requires them to think and formulate their own decisions, leading to intellectual growth.

Nothing great is achieved without commitment

Mastery does not happen overnight.  It requires hard work, perseverance, and a commitment to lifelong learning.  We help our students maintain their commitment throughout their academic journey.

Grades are the result, not the goal

We focus on something more important than just getting a certain grade on a transcript or report card.  Our goal is to provide our students with an interdisciplinary understanding that will help them perform better both in and out of the classroom.
