What is on the DAT?

The Dental Admission Test (DAT) is a standardized multiple-choice graduate entrance exam, which is used across the United States and Canada, that allows students to enter into a dental program at a designated college or university.  The DAT measures a student’s academic and perceptual ability, as well as scientific comprehension.  Students are required to take the DAT in order to apply for admission to a dental school; however, other factors, such as academic records, are also evaluated prior to admission.

The DAT is divided in four sections:

  • Survey of the Natural Sciences (100 science-based questions)
  • Perceptual Ability (90 spatial and visual questions)
  • Reading Comprehension (50 questions)
  • Quantitative Reasoning (40 mathematics-based questions)

The DAT is evaluated based on a student’s score of all 4 sections, which is then computed to a final score of 1-30.

The first section of the DAT is the Survey of the Natural Sciences, in which students need to complete 100 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes.  This section is comprised of questions relating to topics that include Biology, General Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry.  The Biology topics will consist of 40 questions, while the General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry topics will contain 30 questions each.

The second section on the DAT is the Perceptual Ability Test, in which students need to complete 90 questions in 60 minutes.  This part of the exam tests a student’s skills on spatial visualization, as well as interpreting two-dimensional (2D) objects and three-dimensional (3D) objects.  This section is divided in six topics:

  • apertures
  • view recognition
  • angle discrimination
  • paper folding
  • cube counting
  • 3D form development

Each of these six topics will have 15 designated multiple-choice questions.

The third section on the DAT is the Reading Comprehension Test, in which students need to complete 50 questions in 60 minutes.  Students will use their critical thinking skills to understand and interpret three scientific essays in order to answer the questions correctly.  These specific questions will focus on the student’s ability to read, decipher and analyze certain scientific information.

In 2018, only 1% of all students who participated in the ACT obtained a score of 1520 or higher.

The fourth section on the DAT is the Quantitative Reasoning Test, in which students need to complete 40 questions in 45 minutes.  Students will have to use their previous knowledge of Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Statistics to correctly answer the given questions, which can range from inequities and proportions, to probability and data analysis.  A basic calculator, which can only perform functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, will be provided on the exam.

Students will be graded only on correct answers, as there is no penalty for guessing.  This is determined to be a student’s raw score, which is then computed to a scale score.  This scale score, which ranges from 1 to 30, is a student’s final score on the DAT.  According to the DAT guide released by the American Dental Association, there is no passing or failing exam score, and a score of 19 on the DAT is considered average.

Who benefits from DAT tutoring?

Since the DAT is required to become matriculated in a graduate dental program, students should be diligent in studying the required material when preparing for the exam.  However, most students will rely on preparation books to prepare, which provides general concepts and topics pertaining to the DAT, but does not take into consideration students’ academic obstacles.

Every student is uniquely different, which makes their academic obstacles different as well.  A student may have difficulty with memorizing certain specific substitution mechanisms for Organic Chemistry, while another may have difficulty with grasping Le Chatelier’s Principle used in General Chemistry.  Instead of using

preparation books to generally review these concepts, students will be able to gain a mastery understanding of these challenging topics under the guidance and direction of a professional DAT tutor from The Glaser Tutoring Company.

A skilled and talented DAT tutor will not only be able to strengthen a student’s academic weaknesses, but also be able to challenge a student’s knowledge of other required subjects, to ensure complete proficiency in all subject material needed for the DAT.  An experienced DAT tutor will provide a unique preparation plan and study guide that will allow the student to excel on the exam.

Learning principles that we stand by

Each student has a unique learning style

We understand that everyone learns differently.  That's why we tailor our lessons to meet the specific needs of each individual student.

Learn how to think, not what to think

During their academic career, students may fall into the habit of memorizing facts as their primary method of learning.  However, this does not allow students to think for themselves.  Instead, we constantly challenge our students in a way that requires them to think and formulate their own decisions, leading to intellectual growth.

Nothing great is achieved without commitment

Mastery does not happen overnight.  It requires hard work, perseverance, and a commitment to lifelong learning.  We help our students maintain their commitment throughout their academic journey.

Grades are the result, not the goal

We focus on something more important than just getting a certain grade on a transcript or report card.  Our goal is to provide our students with an interdisciplinary understanding that will help them perform better both in and out of the classroom.
