What is the Physics Regents Exam?

The Physics Regents Exam is a standardized New York State multiple-choice and constructed, free-response exam that is given in June upon completion of a Physics class, which is normally taken during a student’s senior year in high school.

Students who are wishing to graduate from high school with an Advanced Regents diploma will fulfill the Physical Setting requirement bu passing this exam.

This 3-hour exam measures how well students can recall the necessary analytical and conceptual knowledge of Physics.  In addition, students need to use their critical thinking skills in order to understand and answer correct answers to theoretical and multi-step questions.

Students are allowed to use a scientific or graphing calculator, a centimeter ruler, and a protractor during this exam.

The Physics Regents Exam is divided into 4 different parts:

Part 1 contains

multiple-choice questions

Each question is worth 1 point.

Each question will have 4 answer choices.

No partial credit will be given for incorrect answers.

Part 2 contains

multiple-choice questions

Each question is worth 1 point.

Each question will have 4 answer choices.

No partial credit will be given for incorrect answers.

Part 3 contains

free-response questions

Each question is worth either 1 or 2 points.

No answer choices are provided for this section.

Partial credit may be given for incorrect answers.

Part 4 contains

free-response questions

Each question is worth either 1 or 2 points.

No answer choices are provided for this section.

Partial credit may be given for an incorrect answer.

Topics on the Physics Regents Exam include:

  • Circular Motion
  • Dynamics
  • Electricity
  • Energy
  • Gravity
  • Kinematics
  • Magnetism
  • Momentum
  • Waves
  • Work

How is the Physics Regents Exam scored?

A minimum of two science teachers will review and grade each student’s individual Physics Regents Exam.  Since every question on this exam is worth 1 point each, no partial credit will be given for wrong answers.  The sum of the four individual parts will be regarded as the student’s total score, which will be converted to a score that ranges from 0 – 100.  This will be the student’s overall score on the Physics Regents Exam.

Receiving the highest Performance Level on the Physics Regents Exam corresponds to scoring an 85-100.

Who benefits from Physics Regents tutoring?

Preparing for the Physics Regents Exam may seem intimidating to some students due to the vast number of conceptual topics that must be mastered, such as quantum theory and waves.  Working with a professional one-on-one Physics Regents tutor from The Glaser Tutoring Company will allow students to understand and eventually master these challenging topics by learning the Physics material according to their unique learning style.

Some students may find preparing for the Physics Regents Exam difficult due to previous academic obstacles in Math, such as Algebra, hindering optimal performance in class.  An experienced in-home or online Physics Regents tutor will be able to identify and address

these mathematical obstacles in the most efficient and effective manner, giving students the needed confidence to perform well on the Physics Regents Exam.

Some students prepare for the Physics Regents Exam with the help of a test-preparation book.  However, this study guide does not provide real-time and personal feedback when an academic obstacle is encountered, inhibiting students to truly master this challenging standardized exam.  Students will instead greatly benefit from the guidance of a knowledgable Physics Regents tutor, who will be able to provide a more engaging and productive environment for students to learn and master the necessary material to perform well on the Physics Regents Exam.

Learning principles that we stand by

Each student has a unique learning style

We understand that everyone learns differently.  That's why we tailor our lessons to meet the specific needs of each individual student.

Learn how to think, not what to think

During their academic career, students may fall into the habit of memorizing facts as their primary method of learning.  However, this does not allow students to think for themselves.  Instead, we constantly challenge our students in a way that requires them to think and formulate their own decisions, leading to intellectual growth.

Nothing great is achieved without commitment

Mastery does not happen overnight.  It requires hard work, perseverance, and a commitment to lifelong learning.  We help our students maintain their commitment throughout their academic journey.

Grades are the result, not the goal

We focus on something more important than just getting a certain grade on a transcript or report card.  Our goal is to provide our students with an interdisciplinary understanding that will help them perform better both in and out of the classroom.
