What is the SAT Biology E/M Subject Test?
The SAT Biology E/M Subject Test is an optional standardized entrance exam students take during high school in order to apply to their desired college program. Students can either choose to take the Ecological (E) or the Molecular (M) Exam depending on which one they feel more knowledgable in.
Some colleges or universities, such as Cornell, require students to take and excel in two SAT subject tests, which may include the SAT Biology E/M Test, in order to become a newly matriculated student at the college or university.

Although there is no high school class given that is specific to preparing students for the SAT Biology E/M Subject Test, it is highly recommended that students master an introductory college-level Biology course that provides laboratory hours, such as AP Biology or the equivalent. It is also recommended that students perform well at Algebra, as students need to analyze and prepare simple algebraic expressions mentally when presented with either word problems or data representation. Similarly, students can greatly benefit from excelling at a second-year Algebra class, as more advanced mathematical concepts are presented on this standardized exam, such as the use of logarithms.
The SAT Biology E/M Subject Test is used throughout the world so that students, no matter the country, can apply and be accepted to a specific college major at their desired college or university. As a result, the SAT Biology E/M Subject Test uses the metric system and not the English units that are predominantly used in the United States.
The SAT Biology E/M Subject Test contains:
- 80 multiple-choice questions which need to be completed in 1-hour. 60 of these questions will be shared between the Biology-E and Biology-M exams and 20 questions are specialized towards their designated exam preference (E or M).
- Each multiple-choice question will have 5 options to choose from.
- Partial credit will be given for all incorrect answers.

How is the SAT Biology E/M Subject Test scored?
The SAT Biology E/M Subject Test is scored as follows:
- 1 point received for every correct answer
- 1/4 point received for every incorrect answer
- 0 points received for all unanswered questions
The sum total of these points equals a student’s composite score, which is translated to a scoring system that ranges from 200-800. Every year the average score for the SAT Biology E/M Subject Test varies. In 2016, the average score on the Biology E Test was 616, and the average score on the Biology M Test was 647.
