Some college programs, such as Cooper Union’s and Cornell’s engineering program, require students to take and excel on the SAT Mathematics Level 1 Subject Test to become a newly matriculated student.
Students are allowed to use a calculator during this standardized exam. Unfortunately, if forgotten, students will be at an extreme disadvantage, as a calculator is needed for 40 to 50 percent of the exam.
Although there is no high school class given that is specific to preparing students for the SAT Mathematics Level 1 Subject Test, it is highly recommended that students master:
In addition, since some trigonometric applications arise on the SAT Mathematics Level 1 Subject Test, students would also benefit from taking a Trigonometry class. However, in some school districts, these classes do not cover specific topics, such as Statistics and Probability, that are needed to succeed on the standardized exam. Students can learn and excel at this material if enrolled in AP Statistics.
The SAT Math Level 1 Subject Test contains:
- 50 multiple-choice questions which need to be completed in 1-hour.

- Partial credit will be given for all incorrect answers.

How is the SAT Math Level 1 Subject Test scored?
The SAT Math Level 1 Subject Test is scored as follows:
- 1 point received for every correct answer
- 1/4 point received for every incorrect answer
- 0 points received for all unanswered questions
The sum total of these points equals a student’s composite score, which is translated to a scoring system that ranges from 200-800. Every year the average score for the SAT Math Level 1 Subject Test varies; in 2016, the average score was a 599.
